Editorial policy and methodology

How we research, verify, date and correct the information on RefundFact.

Last updated Oct 11, 2026

Our sources, in order of preference

  1. Primary legal texts: legislation and regulations, such as EUR-Lex, legislation.gov.uk, Justice Laws (Canada) and the eCFR (US).
  2. Official regulator guidance: for example the European Commission, the UK Civil Aviation Authority, the Canadian Transportation Agency, the US Department of Transportation, the ACCC and India's Department of Consumer Affairs.
  3. A company's own published policy: for company-specific details such as return windows and refund methods.

We don't use other websites' summaries as a source of facts.

Verification statuses

Every company page shows one of three statuses:

StatusMeaning
VerifiedAn editor checked the details against the company's official policy on the date shown.
Not yet verifiedWe list only identifying facts (such as the official website) and general rules. We don't summarise the company's policy.
Under reviewThe policy may have changed, and an editor is re-checking it.

Company pages that aren't verified are excluded from search engine indexes until they are.

Review dates

Guides and country pages show a "last reviewed" date. We schedule a re-check for each piece of content, and sooner when we learn a rule is changing. If a rule is changing but not yet in force, we say so.

How our tools work

  • The flight compensation checker applies each framework's published scope, thresholds and amounts. The rules are written as separate, automatically tested modules for each jurisdiction. Distances use the great-circle method. The checker gives estimates. It doesn't guarantee compensation, and it shows the sources and limitations behind every result.
  • The refund timeline calculator only includes deadlines set by law and checked against the cited source.
  • The letter generator only cites a law where it clearly applies to the request type and country you chose.

Independence

Advertisers and affiliate partners have no say in our content. Affiliate links are labelled, and we always explain how to claim directly and for free.
